Description: 1987 2-Coin Proof American Gold Eagle Set (Box + CoA). Gold is nearing a record all-time high of $2,645 per ounce as of 10/08/2024. The American Gold Eagle coin is the nation’s official gold bullion offering and is available annually in both investment-grade and proof options. The proof coins come in the same four weights available in the bullion versions but were introduced over the course of the first three years of coin availability. 1987 2-Coin Proof American Gold Eagle Set (Box + CoA) Highlights: · Available only during the 1987 issue year!· Arrives in a two-coin display box with included Certificate of Authenticity!· Contains a total of 1.5 Troy oz of actual gold content.· The total face value of the coins is $75 (USD) and fully backed by the US government.· On the obverse of the American Gold Eagle is the depiction of Liberty.· The reverse of the Gold Eagle coins includes the American bald eagle family design. Proof American Gold Eagle coins debuted in 1986 with just a 1 oz gold option struck at the West Point Mint and bearing a “W” mint mark on the coin’s reverse. When it comes to the fractional-ounce coins in the series, the ½ oz coin debuted in 1987 followed by the ¼ oz and 1/10 oz coins in 1988. The fractional-ounce coins were first struck at the Philadelphia Mint and featured the “P” mint mark. It wasn’t until 1994 that all four options in the Proof American Gold Eagle collection were struck by the same mint, with all production shifted to the West Point Mint.In this listing, you can purchase a 2-Coin Proof American Gold Eagle Set from 1987. All 2-coin sets are available in a commemorative display box and include a Certificate of Authenticity. These sets are available only from the 1987 issue year as that was the only year during the Proof Gold Eagle history in which the 1 oz and 1/2 oz coins were the only ones available. On the obverse of the Proof American Gold Eagle Coin is the depiction of Liberty originally created by Augustus Saint-Gaudens in 1907. This design helped revive the appearance of American coinage for the modern era and was used on the Gold Double Eagle from 1907 to 1933 when gold coinage ceased in the United States. The reverse of the Proof Gold Eagles in this two-coin set includes the image of an American bald eagle family. A male eagle is shown flying back to the nest with an olive branch in its talons as a female eagle guards the hatchlings. Coins in this set will feature “W” mint marks on all 1 oz coins and a “P” mint mark on ½ oz coins.
