Description: Peter Rujuwa 2019 Shona Stone Giraffe Sculpture. This was purchased at the Columbus Art Festival for $12,000 in 2019. This is approximately 4 feet and weighs more than 200 lbs. Each of these Shona stone sculptures is one of a kind as they are hand carved from stone according to the unique shape of the stone in coordination with the first tool which is the unique imagination of the artist. The other tools include the regular stone chisels, mallet, files and various wet sanding materials such as sandpaper and sanding disks. Various polishing techniques include bees wax and other stone polishing materials/oils. The medium used on these sculptures is serpentine stone which is rated 5 on the Mohs hardness scale where the hardest is diamond at 10. Softer material like soapstone falls at 1 on this scale. Among the notable collectors of these sculptures are the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and Prince Charles of the United Kingdom. “Serpentine stone sculptures are therapeutic art,” says artist Peter Rujuwa. He adds, “my serpentine stone sculptures are cultural art named after my tribe ‘Shona’ of Zimbabwe. Being a traditional art form, Shona art is passed from one generation to another as I am passing it down to my son Tapiwa who has developed his own unique abstract style.
